Fiji’s garment exports to Aust may lose special treatment

SUVA: An Australian diplomat has warned that Fiji may lose preferential entry of its garment exports into the Australian market.
James Batley, Australia’s High Commissioner in Fiji, told Radio Australia only full compliance by the Fiji textile industry to conditions imposed by Canberra would Fiji garment exports qualify for duty free entry.
Batley said some Fijian companies were withholding company records, and if the trend continues, Fijian exporters won’t enjoy the new tax concessions.
“It’s disappointing to hear that some companies receiving assistance under the programme have not been regularly providing the data required by the programme,” Batley said
“All firms receiving assistance have signed a memorandum of understanding stating that they will fully commit to participation on all components and allow the collection of selected operational and financial data.
“This data is critical to ensuring that the performance gains made by the industry as a result of the programme can be accurately measured and reported.
“We need the co-operation of the industry with the provision of this data,” he said.SUVA: An Australian diplomat has warned that Fiji may lose preferential entry of its garment exports into the Australian market.
