By HARLYNE JOKU
PRIME Minister Sir Michael Somare presented PNG gold from Lihir mine to visiting royalties from Saudi Arabia during a two-hour stop-over in Port Moresby last Saturday evening.
During the presentation, Sir Michael told Prince Al Waleed bin Tala bin Abdulaziz and Princess Ameerah: “We, Papua New Guineans, are great producers of gold.”
Prince Al Waleed, the world’s 13th richest man thanked Sir Michael saying: “My friend, you are so generous.”
The royal entourage numbering 37, arrived on his private Boeing 747 jet at 6.40pm last Saturday evening.
They were met on the tarmac by Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Paul Tiensten and welcomed by Manus, Huli and Oro traditional dancers as they were escorted into the Jacksons Airport international VIP lounge.
Sir Michael later led the prince and princess to the conference room where he presented a gold set from Lihir to the prince, ornamental shells to Princess Ameerah and a coffee table with a crocodile carving.
The women on the royal entourage were presented PNG bilums.
Mr Tiensten and his wife took the royal couple on a brief tour of Port Moresby before they were farewelled by the Prime Minister at about 8.30pm for Japan.
