38 sign tradesmen contract for training with OTML

By HELEN REI
THIRTY-eight tradesmen recently signed contracts with Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) to undergo instrumental training.
There is a demand for people throughout the world in instrumentation which is a trade that deals with instruments in the mining and manufacturing industries.
The introduction of such a training programme is also timely to meet OTML’s demand for a skilled workforce in that field.
The trade is not new in PNG but there are no avenues for training programmes in the country.
National Apprenticeship Trade Testing Board (NATTB) controller Meli Kivung, who witnessed the signing of the contracts, commended OTML for taking the initiative.
He said NATTB had developed standards for an instrumentation programme but there was no avenue to deliver the training.
Mr Kivung said NATTB would therefore develop the test instruments assessment through OTML.
He also thanked OTML for arranging with Central Gippsland TAFE, who will conduct the programme.
Upon meeting requirements and examination standards, the participants will be certified by NATTB.
NATTB would also be accrediting OTML as the avenue for instrumentation training enabling other employers to utilise the avenue.
“It’s an opportunity for other industries or other employers who are employing instrumentation mechanics to use this avenue for training and also for assessment,” Mr Kivung said.
