Man found guilty

A FORMER council manager of the Wantoat local level government council in the Morobe province was found guilty by the National Court in Lae last Friday of misappropriation of funds.
Martin Faga was charged for misappropriation of more than K18,000 in salaries and allowances belonging to village court officials, community health workers and councillors in the area.
Justice Gabi told the court that between October 2002 and April 2003, Faga, while employed as the council manager for the Wantoat local level government council collected various cheques, cashed them and took the money but never paid the village court officials, community health workers and councillors.
Eight State witnesses appeared to give evidence while the accused and three others gave evidence in defence during the trial.
Justice Gabi told the court that he believed the State witnesses after carefully looking at the evidence before him and considered them to be credible while the defence evidence lacked credibility.
He told the court that the accused admitted deducting advance payments from the councillors salaries and allowances and found him to be a dishonest person and convicted him accordingly.
