A TEENAGE girl is recovering from shock and minor gunshot wound after
being abducted by three men in Port Moresby last Saturday night.
The girl from Bougainville Autonomous Region was snatched along Jabiru
Drive at Gordon between 9pm and 10pm but quick action of her family in
reporting her kidnapping to police led to her quick rescue.
Police said the girl was shot with a homemade gun in the arm after she
reportedly struggled with her abductors to get off their vehicle.
However, police was earlier unable to fire at the fleeing suspects’
vehicle to disable it for fear of hitting the girl.
Police said the girl was abducted shortly after she reportedly went out
of their house to buy betelnuts.
Police said the three-man gang snatched the girl along Jabiru Drive and
forcibly took her into their vehicle and was taken to what the girl
believed was either Eight Mile or Nine Mile just outside the city.
There, the suspects reportedly dropped off one of their accomplices.
While the vehicle was still parked, a police patrol drove by, causing
the two suspects to panic and fled back to the city.
It was in the city when a police team sent out to look for the girl saw
the suspects’ vehicle and gave chase.
The chase around the city ended at Kirakira village near Sabama market
when police managed to hit one of the tyres of the suspects’ vehicle,
forcing it off the road.
The suspects then abandoned the girl and the vehicle and fled on foot.
An ambulance was called to the scene after which the girl was rushed to
the hospital as she was bleeding from her wound.
Police were investigating and will interview the girl shortly.
Police said the vehicle used by the criminals was reportedly stolen two
weeks ago.
