PNG clean-up in order
I AM training under a donor-funded
programme overseas. It is extremely alarming not only to read
but hear from professionals who have been to PNG to say that it
is a dangerous place to work and visit.
Although we have our reservation about the source of such
claims, how can one deny it when these raskols, who roam the
streets of our major towns, go unpunished.
In the cultural exchange programme where the host country and
international forums are held, I see an opportunity to promote
my country and I am somewhat pervaded to tell the reality for
the love of this country, which we call home.
We have heard and seen the frequent occurrence of such in a
daily pattern. What is far worse than the rape of a foreigner in
Morata, the attack on the police commissioner in Waigani, the
attack on tourists in Goroka and Kokopo?
This is a support to the letter by a one of the writers to this
column about a couple of weeks ago.
I am a bit hesitant to say our country is safe for any tourist
when we ourselves feel unsecured and had been victim ourselves.
The “big boys” need to come down to reality and feel for
themselves the life that is lived in the common place.
The Government has a massive task ahead. The following areas
need immediate attention:
*Give powers to law enforcing agencies to implement the Vagrancy
Acts;
*Give more power to the police and law enforcers and improve
their conditions. Amend certain laws to support this;
*Empower the agricultural sector and strengthen and secure
overseas market for taro, coconut, sweet potato, coffee, etc;
*Abolish the sale and consumption of betelnut in public places
and offices;
*Eradicate the so-called informal sector in public places;
*Abolish the ever expanding settlements as they are the breeding
ground of criminal activities; and,
*Repatriate the unemployed back to their own provinces.
Don Polye must stop his rhetoric of building multimillion kina
national highways. Do a feasibility study on railway system as
it is low in maintenance.
Give attention to the above. If they are not addressed in part
or fully in this term of Parliament, then I fail to see a better
and safer PNG 10 years from now. I challenge this Government to
prove me wrong.
