Mt Tavurvur restless

By ELIZABETH VUVU
OBSERVED parameters from Mt Tavurvur in Rabaul show that the volcano is restless and the current activity of ash emission may continue but there is little indication of any build up that might lead to significant eruptive activity.
According to a situation report from Rabaul Volcano Observatory (RVO), ash emission is still continuing although much reduced in the last two days.
RVO said that moderate ash fall was continuing on the downwind side, which included Rabaul town, areas of Nonga and surrounding villages.
Occasional roaring noises were also heard accompanying the ash emissions.
Seismic activity decreased to low from moderate level and was dominated by low frequency earthquakes.
A total of 409 low frequency earthquakes including three explosions were recorded last weekend.
Ground deformation measurements indicated a drop of about 0.5cm since last Saturday and a drop of 1cm since ash emission began last Wednesday. It is now steady.
The public is again advised to take precautionary measures against dust when on the downwind side of the ash plume.
RVO said it was advisable to use dust masks, napkins and umbrellas when outdoors.
The public has also been urged not to venture close to Mt Tavurvur in case of being hit by lava fragments from occasional explosions.
