USS Peleliu’s 10-day mission a success


THE US military personnel and volunteers from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) aboard the USS Peleliu, working with the Papua New Guinea Government and several partner nations, completed 10 days of humanitarian and civic assistance mission in Madang province earlier this month.
Partner nations included India, Canada, Vietnam, South Korea, Australia, Japan and New Zealand.
The Pacific Partnership Mission was made possible through the support of the PNG Government and Defence Force, local health care professionals and several NGOs including Project Hope, Aloha Medical Mission and the Pre-Dental Society from the University of California at San Diego.
Medical teams of the Peleliu Pacific Partnership provided a variety of services in Madang, treating 4,647 patients and performing 41 general, 26 eye and nine pediatric surgeries.
The medical teams also provided 5,375 immunisations and produced 1,758 pairs of eye glasses. Dental teams provided 154 adult and 29 pediatric dental care services and performed over 185 teeth extraction.
They also performed veterinary and public health missions.
In addition, sailors from the Naval Construction Force (Seabees) performed seven repair and construction projects .
