PNG Power Limited and Telikom PNG Limited have gone a step further to
improve their services and earn huge profits.
The two Government entities signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU)
yesterday to share assets, facilities, infrastructure and resources
established or located throughout the country.
It has taken a while for both entities to come to this understanding but
Telikom’s acting chief executive officer Peter Loko said the arrangement
would benefit both entities.
The purpose of the MoU is to identify certain projects and use either of
their facilities to carry out projects.
Each project will be negotiated and an agreement reached before the
project is actually carried out.
PNG Power Ltd deputy chief executive officer Lawrence Solomon identified
the fibre optic lines on the power lines as the first facility that
would be offered to Telikom to use to improve its telephone services.
He pointed out that as Government entities they were obliged to work
together to achieve the Government’s objectives and like any other
business, they (PNG Power Ltd) depended heavily on communication.
“Our power poles can also be used for cables instead of Telikom’s
underground cables which have been tempered with on many occasions
causing a lot of problems to their customers,” Mr Solomon said.
“PNG Power can benefit from Telikom’s expertise or advice on the laying
of submarine cables, especially through waterways with strong current,
as we are looking at hooking up electricity supply from Buka Island
through Buka Passage to Kokopau on mainland Bougainville.”
