A14-INCH integrity colour television packed with marijuana was
confiscated by Guard Dog Security personnel at Wewak wharf on Tuesday
while the suspect escaped unnoticed.
The drugs, which were wrapped in six packages, were estimated to fetch
more than K50,000 if sold on the streets.
Provincial police commander Chief Supt Leo Kabilo said the television
set that contained the marijuana was shipped from Madang to Wewak on MV
Rita by an unknown suspect.
Supt Kabilo said the television set was brought into the passenger
terminal for security check when the owner, after realising that he
would be caught, left the screen and immediately walked out without
claiming his cargo.
The province’s police chief said it was not the first time for security
personnel and police to confiscate drugs as there were many cases before
where drugs were found in mattresses, cabbages, radios, speakers and
boilers.
He warned that security personnel and police would continuously check
incoming ships and those who were in the business of smuggling marijuana
should now think twice as police would come down on them if they were
caught.
Supt Kabilo said that police were now fed up with drug traffickers and
consumers because people were not changing despite hefty fines and jail
terms imposed by courts on those found guilty on drug charges.
Meanwhile, Supt Kabilo has commended Guard Dog Security Company in
assisting police in deterring law and order problems in the province.
