Iguan is chief of Onga-Wafa

By HAIVETA KIVIA
THE new member for Markham and parliamentary leader of People’s Labour Party Koni Iguan has being made a chief of the Onga-Wafa and Markham people by his tribal elders.
Mr Iguan was welcomed and made a chief after being away in Port Moresby for the formation of the National Government.
More than 2,000 people welcomed Mr Iguan at the Mutzing Government station, the headquarters of Markham district, and over 8,000 people waited for their new Member at his Intuap village across the Markham river, opposite Mutzing.
Mr Iguan was accompanied by the new Member for Bulolo and deputy parliamentary leader of People’s Progress Party Sam Basil and People’s Labour Party executives.
“I am a simple man who had walked the streets of Mutzing, played with you and shared a meal with you, and to be welcomed back with much fanfare humbles me,” he said.
Mr Iguan added that he owed his election as MP to the children of Markham.
To all the children of Markham, you have my deepest admiration and respect. It was you who made your parents vote for me.
“When I travelled in my Toyota landcruiser throughout the electorate during the campaign period, you would shout for my name and you probably influenced your parents to vote for me in that way,” he told the crowd.
The children of Mutzing community school were also present.
