Lae police resort to foot patrol

POLICE in Lae have stepped up foot patrols around the city in light of the recent surge in armed hold-ups and break-and-enter cases in an effort to maintain crime in the city at a manageable level.
Metropolitan Commander chief Supt Nema Mondiai said that the foot patrol would support the current vehicle patrols around the city.
Mr Mondiai said that policemen had been assigned selected locations around the city for duty each day and night.
He said foot beats and car patrols would try to curb the instances of drunken and unruly behaviour in public shopping centres and PMV bus stops and try to create a peaceful environment around the city.
Mr Mondiai said it would also ensure that the public was safe from harassment and protect the commercial and private properties from harm by robbers and thieves.
He made these remarks when reporting two break and enter cases over the past few days.
Mr Mondiai said that a woman lost K2,442 worth of paint and varnish when thieves broke into the family home last Monday morning.
He said the family was fast asleep at their home at Walnut Street at around 4am last Monday when thieves gained entry into the house and stole the items.
Mr Mondiai said the family discovered the theft later in the morning after they had woke up.
He said police had yet to arrest suspects but are investigating.
In a separate incident, thieves gained entry into the Morobe Stationery showroom by breaking through the side fibro-wall and stole a substantial amount of stationery items belonging to the company.
Mr Mondiai said that the thieves gained entry into the stationery shop at Aircorps Road between last Saturday night and Monday morning where they stole various stationery items and escaped.
He said no arrests had been made and police were still investigating.
