Ensure LLG funds are acquitted, Govt urged

THE Government must ensure that all local level government (LLG) funds are acquitted for before next year’s election.
Pangu Pati East Sepik provincial branch made the call following the announcement of LLG election deferral to next year by Electoral Commissioner Andrew Trawen.
Branch acting vice-president James Manup said it now gave ample time for all presidents as head of LLGs to prepare financial reports and acquittals as they were mandatory requirement by law.
Mr Manup said national members were setting benchmark by acquitting their funds and LLG members were no different in the context of a public office holder.
Meanwhile, the branch congratulated the elevation of Nuku MP Andrew Kumbakor as new parliamentary leader of Pangu Pati and pledged its support and cooperation to the new leadership.
It also extended the same to other winning Pangu members including Martin Aini (Kavieng Open), Francis Marus (Talasea), Thompson Harokaqveh (Goroka) and Philemon Embel (Nipa-Kutubu).

Power installed on Kranget

POWER was installed on Kranget Island near Madang town beachfront following the lodging of a 370m submarine cable across the Dalman Passage in April.
The lodging of the submarine cable that was witnessed by a huge crowd finally bore fruit as the first lights were switched on on July 28 to the delight of children and the community living on the island.
The 600 residential houses on Kranget Island now do not have to cook with candlelight while students can now do their homework in the comfort of electricity.

Call to work with governor

SIMBUS working in both the public and private sectors have been urged to make use of their knowledge to help develop the province.
Member for Chuave Jim Nomane made the call in Kundiawa last Tuesday during the swearing-in ceremony of the national Members into the provincial assembly.
He said Simbu was a small province faced with many challenges because there were only few resources.
Mr Nomane urged all the Simbu parliamentarians and provincial government members to work well with the governor.
Mr Nomane said he was prepared to work closely with Governor John Garia to deliver services to the people of Simbu.
Last Tuesday, Fr Garia announced his decision to remain as governor.

Atiyafa seeks recount

LOSING candidate for Henganofi Open in the Eastern Highlands province Robert Atiyafa has filed an election petition against the Electoral Commission.
Mr Atiyafa is disputing the election and return
of writ for the Henga-
nofi electorate in the province.
He has named the Electoral Commissioner Andrew Trawen as the first defendant, provincial returning officer Jimmy Alwyn as the second defendant and the Electoral Commission as third defendant.
The petition was filed on Tuesday at the National Court in Waigani seeking an order for the recount of all the ballot papers contained in all the ballot boxes for the seat.

Parkop’s promise lauded

TRANSPARENCY International PNG has applauded National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop’s promise to repeal the new NCDC laws, and called on the Government to allow the new governor to do what he wants.
Critics claim the law, passed by the National Alliance-led government in the last Parliament, gave the governor too much power.
TIPNG in commending Mr Parkop said the former government had failed miserably to act to repeal the NCDC Act amendments.
