Three more gold

TEAM PNG bagged another three gold medals and broke a record at the South Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa, yesterday but slipped to second spot on the medals tally board as traditional rival New Caledonia took over our overnight lead. In the gold haul, it was Commonwealth Games gold medallist Ryan Pini who picked up his third gold at his favourite event, the 100m butterfly, and smashed the Games record in the process (story, page 43).
The other two gold medals and a silver came from teenage weightlifter, 17-year-old Jodie Kokiva in the last of the women events.
There were mixed results in other sports.
In softball, our men and women are heading for gold (see story, page 41).
In soccer, our women thumped the Solomon Islands 4-0.
In rugby touch, PNG won bronze medals in both men and women sections.
In hockey, the Tamioks hacked their way to a 4-0 victory over Tonga.
And in netball, the Pepes continued their undefeated run in pool 2 by accounting for Tokelau (see story, page 43)
The medals lead changed hands twice during Day Two – Fiji led with nine gold from PNG earlier in the day before New Caledonia, shot to the top with 12 gold medals, 15 silver and 11 bronze (38 medals), followed by PNG 11, 5, 5 (21) and Fiji 10, 6, 11 (27). See medals tally, page 41.
