Strike threat

By WENDY KATUSELE
THE Port Moresby rugby league finals may be in jeopardy after local referees resolved to boycott this weekendís matches due to continuous assault.
Port Moresby rugby league referees association president Guma Opi said yesterday that at a meeting held on Tuesday evening, most of the referees raised concerns about their safety due to constant assault by players, officials and spectators.
“We have resolved not to control any matches this weekend due to the fact that the POMRL must guarantee my referees safety,” Opi said.
He said the referees will not entertain rowdy clubs and its spectators.
The boycott by the capital city referees will however not affect the scheduled SP Cup preliminary final on Sunday.
Opi said unless POMRL assures his referees of their safety or its capacity to beef up security then his referees would consider taking control of the finals.
“Unless POMRL assures us our safety or we will not control the games,” Opi said.
Opi named some clubs who assaulted referees last weekend that has prompt the action.
