Case against Polye set for Sept 11

A DIRECTIONS hearing into an election petition challenging the election of Kandep MP Don Polye will be held on Sept 11 at the National Court in Waigani.
The petitioner Alfred Luke Manase filed the petition last Thursday.
Mr Manase is disputing the validity of the election in the electorate wherein Mr Polye was declared the winner on July 16.
He wanted the court to declare that Mr Polye was not duly elected and the election in the electorate were null and void and that the Electoral Commissioner convene a by-election.
Mr Manase alleged foul play, illegal practices and irregularities by election officials allegedly aided by Mr Polye during the polling process in the electorate.
He claimed that Mr Polye rigged the process which led to his massive win by 21,000 votes.
Mr Manase alleged that most of the polling officials, counting officials as well as the returning officers were cronies of Mr Polye and ‘hijacked’ the polling process.
Mr Manase also questioned the impartiality and fairness of the election process which he claimed was breached because the process itself was not transparent.
