AH yes – ’tis Friday and the weekend will shortly be upon us, complete with all manner of frivolities and jollifications including the current Quiz. DeeNesenolis@hotmail.com is the address, the closing date is this coming Tuesday at 5pm, and the question ... what or where is Budibudi?

SMASH pix – or if you are of an older generation, vintage gems from the Silver Screen. We cannot recreate the local Lyric, Odeon or Hippodrome, nor even the Rialto nor the Esquire. But we can point out interesting older movies and tell you where or when they’re appearing on PNG television. So with the weekend in mind, we offer the following.
***
TONIGHT at 9.15 on the MGM channel: The Thomas Crown Affair. This film is remembered for style, for all the camera tricks and settings and acting mannerisms that summed up the sixties. It’s very easy to watch, graced by Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway and it has an iconic theme, The Windmills of your Mind, penned by Michel Legrand.

BUT as a critic said at the time: “This film is stunning on the surface, like a haute couture fashion model – and just as concave and undernourished underneath.” It’s still worth your time; don’t miss the famous sexy chess game.

WELCOME September tomorrow with the “late” movie screening on 7 Central at 12.25am Sunday, The Dancer Upstairs. This is an excellent film released in 2002, a tense thriller involving an honest policeman caught between terrorists and a ruthless government. It’s based firmly on the true story of Abimael Guzman, the leader of the Shining Path rebels in Peru, who was captured above a dance studio in Lima in 1992. Don’t miss this one.

QUIZZERS! No, you’re not forgotten, but we have to connect with a highly diverse audience in the Column ... Richard La’a in Toowoomba was among the early birds with this response to our Gemo island question: “Gemo was famously known for being a leprosy colony where patients were quarantined and treated. The colony was at the western end of the island. Gemo is at latitude – 9.48056 and longitude 147.117.”

MORE on Sunday – have a top weekend. Cheers!
