EC media centre ceases operation

By HARLYNE JOKU
The media centre that had served radio and newspaper journalists both locally and abroad during the elections, ceased its operation last Friday.
Coordinator Joseph Kaptigau said the centre had completed the end of its mission after serving its purpose as of July 30, during the counting period of the 2007 General Elections.
He further thanked his staff for their dedication and support in ensuring that the media was fed with accurate election results during the counting period.
Mr Kaptigau said although the task was difficult and challenging for his staff who worked 24 hours to prepare election results, they, as a team, were generally happy with the outcome.
He made the remarks at a farewell reception he hosted on Friday at the media centre.
Information and communication director of the Electoral Commission Margaret Vagi thanked Mr Kaptigau and his team saying this was the first time that such a centre had been established.
Ms Vagi said the centre had played its role and contributed towards the success of the elections.
PNG Media Council executive Justin Kili urged that the Electoral Commission to allow the centre to continue to operate during the Local Level Government Elections and other national events.
