Gulf Governor Havila Kavo has emphasised
the need for human resource development in the province.
Governor Kavo made this known when he visited Gulf students at the
University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) last Saturday.
He said that he planned to bring together all Gulf elite and students
for a brain-storming session on the development needs of the province,
and how to address them.
He said the educated elite would form the basis of what he called a
“think-tank”, that would share ideas on how best to move the province
forward.
Governor Kavo said the province was rich in resources but lacked skilled
human resources to bring tangible development to the resource areas.
He was accompanied to UPNG by a number of Gulf elite including Sarea Soi,
Soroi Eoe and Harold Farapo.
The students said it was the first time for a governor to come down to
their level.
They said he was like a father visiting them so they asked him to cut a
Father’s Day cake in place of their fathers back home.
They asked the governor to engage students during their school breaks to
help carry out awareness campaigns on law and order, HIV/AIDS and other
social issues affecting the people.
They also made recommendations for medical students to be engaged by the
provincial government in remote health centres in for their on-the-job
training.
Mr Kavo also presented K5,000 to help the students carry out their work
plans for the year.
