Probe welcomed

THE Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS has welcomed the announcement by the PNG Government to investigate the reported “live burial” of people living with HIV/AIDS in Southern Highlands.
Alarmed by recent reports that people living with HIV have been buried alive in Southern Highlands, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS and the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed serious concerns that gross violations of human rights may have been committed against HIV positive people.

Concerns raised over candidates

CONCERNS have been raised that candidates who were unsuccessful in the other seats in Madang are planning to contest the Rai Coast by-election to get into Parliament.
And the Electoral Commission has been called upon to properly screen all candidates who nominate, to ensure they were residentially qualified to run.
This concern was raised by a candidate who asked that his name be withheld.
The seat was left vacant after convicted rapist James Yali’s appeal application was thrown out by the Supreme Court, thus nullifying his election.

Dust threat lessens

RESIDENTS of Rabaul town affected by dust from Mt Tavurvur are relieved after a significant reduction in ash emission, beginning last Thursday night.
The Rabaul Volcanic Observatory (RVO) said the reduced activities were characterised by occasional emission of pale grey ash clouds drifting to the west to northwest of Tavurvur.
It said the occasional roaring noises were being accompanied by the emissions and occasional weak glow visible at night, with seismic activity dropping to a moderate level with low frequency earthquakes and irregular tremors.
The RVO advised the public to take precaution against dust when on the downwind side of the ash plumes.
