New medium used to educate people about HIV

By ELIZABETH MIAE
A NEW medium in communication is being used to educate people and spread the message about HIV/AIDS.
And that is through staging of dramas in video format and short plays.
This proved to be effective as shown during the open day of Anglicare Stop AIDS centre in Port Moresby last Friday when it opened its gates for the public to see first hand what type of services are offered.
Spreading the message of HIV/AIDS through drama was very good in the rural areas, settlements and local communities, Anglicare’s multimedia coordinator Bao Waiko said.
He said while it could be seen as entertainment for the people, they were being educated at the same time.
He added that it was good for those who were illiterate.
The highlight of the day was the screening of the drama show Waigani Swamp Ghost that was designed and developed by the Anglicare staff as part of their training initiative with their multimedia studio with the aim to entertain and educate the community.
Country director Dominica Abo was pleased with the response from business houses that showed their support towards the organisation.
She also thanked the media for its coverage of HIV/AIDS in the country.
Since it was established in 1999, Anglicare has ventured into various community and individual-based programmes and counselling and care for people living with HIV/AIDS.
