Mothers from Port Moresby, Kerema hold exchange meet

CATHOLIC mothers from the Mary Queen of Pacific parish in Port Moresby and the Sacred Heart parish of Lese Oalai in Gulf province came together for the first time last weekend to exchange baskets.
The exchanging of baskets is usually done between mothers’ groups in the diocese of Port Moresby and the ceremony last weekend was the first of its kind with the diocese of Kerema.
More than 100 mothers from Lese Oalai travelled to Port Moresby to take part in the ceremony bringing along mats, baskets, grass skirts and garden food.
The Waigani Mothers’ group in turn exchanged with them goods that are of basic necessity such as food, kerosene, clothes and garden tools.
President of the Waigani Mothers’ group Angela Mandie-Filer said she wanted to see this happen more often and the aim was to deal with poverty.
She said: “We give them what they don’t have and we don’t ask for specific goods. It’s basically women networking together.”
The Waigani Mothers’ group will pay a return visit to Lese later this month to participate in a similar ceremony.
