We’re on target!

MORE gold are expected to come the way of Team PNG during the next week of the South Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa, PNG Sports Federation chief Sir John Dawanicura said at the weekend.
“We are still within the target in top five in terms of number of gold,” Sir John said, as PNG collected more medals in the pool and in team sports during the past three days.
PNG seats second on the medals tally with 25 gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze medals.
In the pool, Team PNG relied on Commonwealth Games champion Ryan Pini who ended proceedings at the Apia Aquatic Centre with eight gold and two silver medals, and was named Swimmer of the Games for the second consecutive Games.

On the field, more gold came from

*Softball, where both men and women were successful

*Lawn bowls where Peter Juni and Pomat Topal picked up the gold in the pairs;

*Squash, where PNG women won gold for the first time ever in the team even

*Bodybuilding where we also picked up three gold; one silver and one bronze medals;

*Cricket where we beat Fiji for the gold in the finals.

Elsewhere, we picked up silver in

*Women hockey after going down to Fiji 3-2 in extra time; and

*Anna Lisa Mopio-Jane who also picked two bronze.

PNG picked up bronze in rugby sevens beating the Solomon Islands in the play-off, and three bronze medals in touch men’s, women’s, and mixed divisions.
Today (Sunday, Samoa time) is a rest day.
The competition starts tomorrow when athletics team hit the tracks of Apia Park Stadium.
Surfing and archery did not do well. Archery have set some PNG records at the Games but were far from medal contention which something PNG Archery Association will have to work on.
