Muruks to defend SP Cup

By DAVID KAPI
DEFENDING SP Cup premiers Mabey & Johnson Muruks will defend their title following a narrow 18-16 win against Brian Bell Bulldogs at Lloyd Robson Oval in Port Moresby yesterday.
The Lae-based Mendi men will meet the 2007 minor premiers Agmark Gurias in the grand final at Lloyd Robson Oval on Sunday.
The Muruks, after defeating in-form Bintagor Lahanis 20-10 last weekend in Lae, hung on to deny the Bulldogs a maiden grand final appearance.
Yesterday, the Dogs lacked disciplined as they gave away penalties early in the first half, enabling winger Siva Milfred to score two tries in same fashion in ten minutes to take Muruks to a commanding 10-0 lead, but a Jersey Joe try narrowed the scoreline to 10-4 at halftime.
In the second half, the Muruks added a controversial four-pointer through centre Jonathan Wagano – the ball appeared to have been knocked forward by hooker Charlie Wabo but referee awarded the try for Muruks to lead 14-4.
However, a brilliant 50-metre individual try to fullback Joshua Poria sparked a near Dogs comeback and second row Suckling Danage looked to break the Muruks heart with an individual try but a killer blow from winger Terry Toa did much for the Muruks who did quite well to secure a grand final berth with a narrow 18-16 win.
