PM leaves for Apec meeting

PRIME Minister Sir Michael Somare leaves today to join Australian prime minister John Howard and United States president George Bush at the Apec leaders’ meeting in Sydney.
Sir Michael said in a statement yesterday he would be engaging quite a number of large nations that were interested in PNG’s natural resources in talks.
He said he expected to have one-on-one bilateral discussions with the leaders from several economies including China, New Zealand and Peru.
Peru is a member of the coalition of rainforest nations, which Sir Michael co-chairs.
He said developing countries like PNG that had large rainforests were ‘the lungs’ of the world, and PNG had taken the lead in highlighting the contentious issue of climate change, including economic benefits that could be derived from carbon trading.
“Climate change would again feature prominently in the Apec leaders’ discussions,” Sir Michael said.
The Prime Minister will be accompanied by the Chief Secretary Isaac Lupari.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Sam Abal and his delegation are already in Sydney.
