Vital for us to have a CT scan, says Kevau

THERE is a need for better medical equipment to carry out surgeries in all public hospitals throughout the country, according to the leading orthopedic surgeon Dr Ikau Kevau.
He made this comment after a presentation made yesterday during the Medical Symposium showed that most surgeons were at risk as there were improper equipment.
These included gloves, aprons and protective boots which were very important in the operating theatre. Dr Kevau said there was a need for a computed tomography (CT) scan (this device contains an X-ray that takes images of the body from different orientations), which is not available in the country.
He called on the government for their support in purchasing one.
This would cost about K2 million and is of great importance as it will be used in the scanning of injuries.
“At the moment we have a second-hand CT scan at the Port Moresby General Hospital but it is not functioning.
“We need an experienced technical person to fix the machine and there is nothing we can do at the moment,” Dr Kevau said.
“The only CT scan available in the country is at the Pacific International Hospital in Port Moresby which would cost a patient K700.
“Not every Papua New Guinean can afford to pay this amount,” he said.
