Poor handling of evidences hampers probe into racket

By CLIFFORD FAIPARIK
POOR handling of evidences has hampered investigations into the suspect involved in producing ammunition, drugs, prepaid mobile cards and documents such as passports and driving licences in Port Moresby, police said yesterday.
“The officers who had stumbled into this illegal operation last month after receiving a break-and-enter report at Boroko East did not bother raiding the new hideout of the suspect after being tipped off.
“They also did a rough job when collecting evidences at the suspect’s former rented house.
“Also, the detectives investigating the racket are now in the Western province investigating another alleged drug and gun smuggling network involving police officers in Daru.
“Such lack of attitude in investigating such racket is truly a threat to the nation’s security, given the increased terrorism activities in the region.”
Police said that the only option now was to inform border authorities in Western and Sandaun provinces to keep an eye out for the Chinese with an Indonesian name of possibly crossing over to Indonesia.
Police said the suspect, now in hiding, had organised with his friends to break in to his former rented house at Boroko East to get back his computer that had electronic data of his illegal operation.
Other valuable equipment and items like cans of smokeless gunpowder, primers (firing devices), several rounds of bullets, chemicals that could be used to produce cocaine and other drugs, scanners, printers, fingerprint kits and other related and illicit items were left scattered on the floor.
Police had found that someone had cut the fencing and broken a lock to gain entry into the house while the current residences were out.
The suspect, in his 30s, was evicted from his rented house after falling behind his rental payments. He entered the country in 2001.
