Students learn new fire fighting skills

MORE students in Lae are gaining new skills and knowledge on how to control fire using different methods and instrument used to combating fire.
Students ranging from elementary up to tertiary institutions in the city attended the fire awareness week hosted by PNG Fire Service (PNGFS).
Since the launching last Monday, the awareness drive has gained momentum.
Yesterday, students from Lae Technical Collage were briefed on the different types of fire and how to use a fire extinguisher effectively.
While conducting the awareness, Lae Fire Service (LFS) commander Supt Bal Kena said Lae city was prone to fire because of its rapid urbanisation and infrastructure development.
Supt Kena attributed the fire risk to civil disturbance, over-crowding and increasing squatter settlements.
On the theme, “Enhancing service delivery in partnership with the community through fire prevention, fire safety and you”, Supt Kena said inadequate resources were an obstacle to keeping fire safety.
“I want to commend my staff for their dedication and hard work even when LFS was down with resources. We should know that advanced technology does not guarantee you safety to the fire environment. So the community and us must work to help each other,” Supt he said.
He added that the people were ignorant in taking extra precaution against fire and more awareness was needed to educate the people to be aware of the risks within their environment.
Supt Kena also said that it was time the business community and the government take the lead in assisting the PNGFS to educate the people on fire hazards and how to curb them.
