THREE employees of a construction company currently working on the Hagama Bridge
in Yangoru are now fighting for their lives at the Kubalia Health Centre from
severe head and body injuries allegedly caused by members of the Yangoru police
on Monday night.
The three were directing the flow of traffic on the newly built bridge when they
were badly assaulted by three truckloads of policemen from Yangoru, who were in
hot pursuit of drunkards who were disturbing traffic at the nearby Kusambuk
area.
An eyewitness said the policemen arrived at the bridge and started bashing up
the three men after firing four warning shots into the air.
He said the three were beaten up using canes, stones and sticks. They were even
kicked around while on the ground.
One of them has a wound in the arm after he was allegedly bitten.
The eyewitness said attempts by other company employees to stop the policemen
were unsuccessful because they were outnumbered.
He said the three men were rushed to Maprik Hospital only to find that the
doctor was in Port Moresby for the Medical Symposium and were taken back to
Kubalia, where they were being attended to by the health extension officer
there.
He said a senior policeman from Yangoru, who led the police contingent that
night, had verbally apologised to the workers.
The eyewitness was in Wewak yesterday to lodge a complaint at the Wewak police
station.
Provincial police commander Chief Supt Leo Kabilo could not be reached yesterday
for comments.
