Yangoru father takes Wewak GH to task

A MAN, who assisted in delivering his daughter at Ambukanjai village in Yangoru last week, has expressed disappointment over Wewak General Hospital’s inability to entertain patients from Yangoru following the closure of their rural hospital nine months ago.
A former academic and chairman of the Mt Turu Landowner Company Louis Koinduo told The National that it was very sad for Maprik and Wewak Hospitals to send back patients from Yangoru when they were seeking medical attention and treatment for emergency cases including deliveries.
A very disappointed Mr Koinduo also approached the provincial health adviser Albert Bunat and the Office of the East Sepik Provincial Administration but there were no favourable responses as yet.
The East Sepik Provincial Administration, when contacted by The National, said they were aware of the situation but declined to comment because politics might jeopardise the whole restoration programme at Yangoru station.
Mr Koinduo said something must be done immediately to restore normal services at the Yangoru Hospital because, if the situation was prolonged, innocent lives would be lost as other hospitals were refusing to attend to patients from Yangoru.
The Yangoru Rural Hospital was closed about nine months ago as a result of the hospital’s inability to access water from the main water supply.
Mr Bunat said the tragedy for the people of Yangoru had been blamed on the work of hooligans who destroyed pipes that carried water from the storage tank to the hospital late last year.
He said all staff from outside of Yangoru area had been sent away while a lone nursing officer with two community health workers from Yangoru were left behind to take care of the facility.
Attempts by The National to get comments from Wewak General Hospital chief executive officer were unsuccessful as he was attending the Nurses Symposium at Kaindi.
