Suspension of former South Fly police boss lifted

By CLIFFORD FAIPARIK
THE suspension of former South Fly police commander Chief Inspector Naua Vanuawaru has been lifted, police said yesterday.
His was suspended last April after being accused of leading a riot in Daru last year, police said.
The suspension was lifted last week by detectives from Port Moresby upon their arrival in Daru.
Earlier, the Daru district court cleared him of one count of threatening the South Fly administrator Michael Viru.
The head office detectives came to investigate an alleged drug and guns smuggling ring involving police officers in Western province.
Mr Vanuawaru was now expected to become the staff officer under the Human Resource Assistant Commissioner at the police headquarters in Konedobu, Port Mores-by.
Last February, Mr Vanuawaru led a two-day protest along with his officers by refusing to work to demand much-needed maintenance for their barracks accommodation.
The police officers also removed Government vehicles and forcibly shut down the provincial administration offices.
As a result, the provincial administration released K200,000 to the Works Department to renovate the barracks, as demanded by Mr Vanuawaru.
Meanwhile, Supt Simon Nigi is now the acting provincial police commander.
