‘Drunk’ Juni is sacked

Nonetheless, PNG women fared well with gold, silver and bronze in the 800m and 100m, and gold in squash and silver and bronze elsewhere (see story, Page 43).
But the talking point was on Juni, hero turned villain, who was disciplined before the Team PNG disciplinary committee dropped the axe on him - banning him from the remaining of his singles event.
Juni is Papua New Guinea’s number one singles bowler, and only last week he paired with Lae youngster Pomat Topal to win the pairs gold, a PNG first in lawn bowls in Apia.
Team PNG Chef de Mission Tamzin Wardley said in a short media statement from Apia yesterday that Juni had been disciplined and withdrawn from his singles event for the consumption of alcohol while still competing in the event in Apia on Monday.
Wardley said she “regretted the action taken but all members of Team PNG were fully aware of the required code of conduct expected from them”.
“Juni has been struck from the singles competition, now in its fifth round, and will not be allowed to take part in the remainder of the competition,” the media statement read.
Wardley confirmed that Juni was subject to the Team PNG disciplinary process and that the tribunal panel had discussed the situation with Juni and his team management.
The PNG Men’s Lawn Bowls Association has been advised of the withdrawal of Juni from competition.
“We are all extremely saddened by the action taken.
“Withdrawing an athlete from competition is a drastic measure but rules are rules and when you travel with a team the size of ours, every member has to play their part.
“I hope that the withdrawal of Juni from his event does not affect the rest of his team who continue their Fours competition today,” the Wardley statement read.
Sports Editor Henry Morabang reported from Apia that Juni was struggling to find his form after losing two matches and won one at the Apia Bowling Club on Tuesday.
According to team manager Kiliwi Nabo, Juni was due to play a Samoa opponent yesterday and today he his remaining games were against Niue, Tokelau and Norfolk Island today.
