Death caused by head, neck diseases can be prevented

By ALISON ANIS
DEATH caused by head injuries, brain tumours and other diseases associated with head and neck including spinal trauma can become preventable if treated at its early stage.
Director of Neurosurgery Department of the Alfred Hospital in Australia Prof Jeffery Rosenfeld told participants at the medical symposium in Port Moresby that these diseases were classified as common diseases in Papua New Guinea.
He explained that children who developed brain tumours and other head and neck diseases at an early age could grow to live a full healthy adult life if the disease was detected for early treatment.
“Likewise, adults who suffer from severe head injuries can be treated to live rather than die from it given that PNG has the right medical treatment facility.”
He added that operations for injuries, however, must began straight after the damage was done.
Prof Rosenfeld was speaking on the subject on neurosurgery – associated with head and neck including spinal diseases which is a common sight in PNG.
He said medical examinations revealed that spinal and brain tumours were common among children under 12 years.
“Most children who turn up at the hospital for a CT scan in PNG turned up having tumour,” he said, adding that most of the children will die if there are no available treatments.
