A PEDOPHILE and rapist is likely to be sentenced by the Lae National Court on Monday.
Michael Gilmai, in his 20s, from Kamtai district, Simbu province, appeared before National Court judge Justice Sao Gabi on Aug 22 and pleaded guilty to raping a four-year-old girl.
The victim was left in Gilmai’s care while her father was serving a term at the Buimo jail in Lae.
Gilmai had admitted
to the court that he
had abused the little
girl between June 4 and 19 in 2005 at Kamkumung settlement in Lae.
Gilmai was charged with the sexual penetration of a minor under 12-years-old under the Section 229B, of the Criminal Code Act.
Nicholas Miviri, lawyer in charge of the Public Prosecutor’s office in Lae in his submission for an appropriate penalty on the convict, told the court that young children were vulnerable to some form of sexual assault by their own relatives and others entrusted into their custody.
He said the courts must therefore impose appropriate penalty and jail terms to reflect the serious nature of child sex crimes.
Mr Miviri told the court that these sentences must also bring a message across to the parents and relatives who have been charged with these offences that the laws protecting young children are not to be belittled by those who seriously abuse the trust placed on them.
Justice Gabi had requested for a pre-sentence report from the community-based corrections office before he gives the sentence.
