By ELIZABETH VUVU
A MALE student from a teacher’s college in East New Britain was sentenced to six months imprisonment after police intercepted a drug consignment detected in a new transmitter radio posted to him from Lae.
Gideon Koe, 24, from Terex village, Enga province, is a second year trainee student at the Kabaleo Teachers College.
He appeared before the Kokopo District Court yesterday where he pleaded guilty to the charge.
The court heard that he was arrested last Tuesday after staff at the Kokopo Post Office discovered a consignment of marijuana stuffed in a new transmitter radio that was posted to him.
The court also heard the three big packets of marijuana were hidden in the radio’s speakers and packed neatly in the box.
While Koe was signing the consignment form for receiving his package, police were immediately alerted and came to arrest him.
Provincial police commander Supt Allan Kundi said police had established networks with all agencies in the province and warned people with funny ideas to refrain from doing it.
Magistrate John Pake sentenced Koe to six months with hard labour at the Kerevat correctional service.
It is understand that Koe is the third student from the college this year to be engaged in criminal activity, the first two students were charged with murder and rape respectively.
