Additional ministries illogical, says Opposition

OPPOSITION leader Sir Mekere Morauta said yesterday he was astounded by the sheer illogicality of Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare’s justification to increase the size of the cabinet.
Sir Mekere claimed the Prime Minister planned to increase the number of ministries by six to 34.
“For the Prime Minister to simply tell the nation that additional ministries are needed to cater for the increase in population, is an insult to the intelligence and common sense of Papua New Guineans,” Sir Mekere said in a statement.
“Papua New Guineans cannot be fooled any longer. They can see clearly the reasons behind the facade that Somare had constructed to justify the increase.
“If population growth were his reason, why did he not do it last year or five years ago? What has changed so dramatically now to justify this sudden and ill-conceived move?
“This superficial style of decision-making by the Prime Minister is designed to entrench NA and Somare in power. It is clear that NA is capable of suffocating the country to hold onto power. It is clear that NA is drunk with power.”
Sir Mekere said in his last term of office, Sir Michael destroyed the party system and People’s Progress Party, United Resources Party and People’s National Congress.
