Government backs OSL’s LNG plan

THE Government will support plans of Oil Search Lt and its joint venture partners to decide by 2012 the setting up a liquefied natural gas project in Southern Highlands.
This was the message conveyed by acting Prime Minister Dr Puka Temu to more than a massive crowdwho gathered in Tari last Friday to welcome a his delegation.
The group, which also included Southern Highlands Governor Anderson Agiru, Petroleum and Energy Minister William Duma, Finance and Treasury Minister Patrick Pruaitch, Planning and District Development Minister Paul Tiensten and Tari Pori MP and Vice Minister for Works, Transport and Civil Aviation James Marabe, visited OSL’s operations in Kutubu and Hides.
“The Government is here in Tari this (Friday) morning,” Mr Duma told the crowd.
Oil Search and its joint venture partners were looking at proposals for developing a LNG project from the resources here, and we will push for a LNG project decision by 2012.”
Dr Temu said the National Government “will support the project but the provincial and local level governments and the people have to support it as well”.
“This is the first official visit by the three week old Somare-Temu Government … we didn’t go to the Southern region, we didn’t go to the New Guinea Islands, we came to Southern Highlands, to the Hela region because we recognised the importance of the big kaukau garden here,” Dr Temu said.
