A CHINESE last Thursday paid K4,000 in court fine to avoid a jail term of five months with hard labour at Bomana jail but he may be on his way home to China anytime soon.
The Boroko District Court last Thursday convicted Dongxin Zheng after finding him guilty of remaining in Papua New Guinea without an entry permit, an action in breach of Section 6 (1) (a) of the Migration Act 1978.
After Thursday’s conviction, senior magistrate Allan Kopi further ordered that officers from the Foreign Affairs and Immigration Department make necessary arrangements for his deportation.
Zheng was then ordered to pay a court fine of K4,000 or serve a jail term of five months in hard labour at the Correctional Services jail at Bomana, outside Port Moresby.
The court also issued a Certificate of Conviction dated last Thursday.
The certification statement read: “I hereby certify under the provisions of Section 33 of the Evidence Act 1975 on the 6th day of September 2007 Dongxin Zheng of Minxin village, Fujian, China, in Papua New Guinea was convicted by the District Court held at Boroko by Mr A. Kopi...”
It continued “... did remain in the country without entry permit in contravention of the migration Act 1978”.
Officers from the Compliance Division of the Foreign Affairs and Immigration Department were at the Court House and received copies of the Certificate of Conviction.
