Three employees of a construction company, who were allegedly severely
assaulted by Yangoru police at Hagama Bridge last Monday, registered
their complaint at the Wewak police station last Wednesday.
Two of the three men told The National last Thursday that they were
pleased that police were determined to take action against their
colleagues who had acted in an unprofessional manner.
Wilson Mori and Barnabas Mengi said they had suffered injustice at the
hands of law-enforcing officers and they could not wait to ensure that
justice was done to compensate for their injuries.
Mr Mori said they were directing the flow of traffic on the newly built
bridge when three truck loads of policemen from Yangoru, who were in hot
pursuit of drunks stopped and manhandled them.
An employee, who witnessed the entire drama, alleged that the policemen
arrived at the bridge and started bashing up the three men after firing
four warning shots into the air.
The eyewitness said the trio were severely bashed up by the policemen
who were armed with canes, stones and sticks.
“Some even used bush knives and boots when the three men were knocked to
the ground,” he said.
Besides injuries to his head and other parts of the body, Mr Mori was
also suffering from a wound on his arm where a policeman had allegedly
bitten.
The witness said attempts by other company employees to stop the police
from beating the three men were unsuccessful because they were
outnumbered.
The three men, who were admitted to the Kubalia health centre last
Monday night were discharged last Thursday and were currently working on
their statements and medical reports which would be presented to police
investigators.
