Mendi High School’s state shocks Agiru, promises to give a facelift

By ANDREW ALPHONSE
MENDI High School, one of the oldest in the Southern Highlands, is set to undergo major renovation in the next five years.
This follows a recent visit to the school by Governor Anderson Agiru, who took a break from the provincial assembly meeting, catching both the staff and students by surprise.
There, Mr Agiru was shocked by the school’s rundown state, and promised to give it a facelift.
He was accompanied by Imbonggu MP Francis Awesa, Mendi MP Isaac Joseph and Komo-Margarima MP Francis Potape.
Both Mr Awesa and Mr Joseph are former students of the school.
Mr Agiru was shocked with the appalling state of the classrooms, dormitories, staff houses and other facilities, most of which were destroyed during a bloody gun battle in 2001 as two warring tribes that live on the fringes turned the school into a battle field.
Following the fight, the school was forced to close but was re-opened in 2003 by Sir Peter Barter.
Deputy principal Jennifer Peter told the delegation that the school was in dire need of facilities and learning materials.
Mr Agiru said his government would see that the school gets a facelift in the next few months.
The school currently has more than 400 Grades 9 and 10 day students and about 28 staff members.
