O’Neill stresses skills training

ONE of the great areas of need in Papua New Guinea is to train and improve the skills of the nation’s workforce, Minister for Public Service Peter O’Neill said last Friday.
“It was very easy to blame the public service for our failure to deliver services efficiently and effectively to the people no matter where they lived. But it is unfair to place the whole blame on the public service. It is one, those of us who are privilege to hold public office, have to share,” he said.
Mr O’Neill said as Minister for Public Service, he wanted everyone to share the blame and get on with the job of addressing together the great challenges associated with improved service delivery, and providing good government.
“The national public service training programme is an important part of ensuring public service has professionalism, the training and the skills needed to contribute to good government in Papua New Guinea.
“If we are not only to effectively deliver services, but also reform the public administration to strengthen accountability and decision-making at the district and community levels, we need to recruit and train more young men and women, who are prepared to serve the Government in rural and remote areas as well as departmental head offices in Waigani.”
