The Disaster and Emergency Service in Lae, Morobe province, yesterday
urged villagers to keep away from rivers following the recovery of a
body at the Busu River.
Director of the Disaster and Emergency Service Roy Kamen said people
with homes and gardens along the river banks must move to higher ground
because the rivers were flooding due to the rain in recent months.
“We keep telling the people to move away from the river banks but they
are not listening,” a very concerned Mr Kamen told The National, as he
and his team were helping Yanga villagers remove the unidentified body
from the river bank.
The villagers located the body of the man last Friday and alerted the
disaster and emergency office.
Meanwhile, Mr Kamen said his office was continuing to move relief food
supplies to victims of landslides and floods.
“I want to thank Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) for
coming to the help of the victims by supplying five tonnes of rice and
two drums of fuel for the boat to distribute the food,” he said.
“The first was Goodman Fielders who also donated five tonnes of rice.”
He said the food given by ADRA was already distributed to villagers
along the Bukawa coast.
Mr Kamen said his office would engage a bigger plane soon to move the
relief supplies to the affected areas.
“We have already spent over K100,000 on charters. We are trying to get a
cheaper charter to move the supplies,” he added.
