Parents unhappy over reduced refunds

By ELIAS LARI
PARENTS of Grade 9 students attending the Mount Hagen Secondary School have accused administrators of the school for not paying their full refunds after receiving the subsidy from the National Government.
They complained that they were supposed to be receiving K220 but instead they got a refund of K150.
The school deducted K5 from every student, which it charged for a cheque slip.
The parents’ complained that they were not informed of such a deduction.
Tony Mark, a parent of a Grade 9 student, who claimed to represent other concerned parents, said they paid K1,000 school fee for each student and expect the school fully refund what is rightly theirs.
He claimed the school illegally deducted K70 from their refund and only gave them K150.
Mr Mark said that the school also failed to call a parent and guardian meeting (PNC) to inform them about the deduction.
But deputy principal of the school James Pini defended the deductions.
“It’s not our business to hold back the money, and it’s not our money, but cheque slips are expensive and that is the fact,” he said.
Mr Pini said parents should be happy because Mount Hagen Secondary was the only school in the country that refunded fees.
