Central man arrested for stealing K25,000

A CENTRAL province man was arrested and charged by police in Lae last Thursday for stealing K25,000 belonging to another man in Madang in 2005.
Metropolitan commander chief Supt Nema Mondiai said yesterday the suspect Joseph Arua, 49, from Na’ara village of Bereina, was arrested and charged with stealing by false pretence under Section 406 (1) of the Criminal Code Act.
Mr Mondiai said that the suspect admitted to stealing from a Caspar Manzo, the complainant who is self-employed, when police located him in Lae and questioned him.
He said that in early January 2005, the complainant met the suspect who told him that there were lots of gold in the Ramu nickel mine and he wanted to buy them for the complainant.
Mr Mondiai said that the complainant trusted the suspect and he deposited the K25,000 in cash into the suspect’s BSP account in Madang on March 30, 2005.
He said that the suspect then withdrew the money and used it for his own use.
Mr Mondiai said the matter was reported to police on Sept 1, and after investigations, police picked up the suspect and charged him last Thursday.
Meanwhile, Mr Mondiai said that police were investigating the shooting death of a robber during a car chase at 2 Mile last Sunday.
He said the deceased’s body was yet to be identified and police had been instructed to get more details on the shooting incident.
In a separate armed robbery incident, a worker with Papindo Trading was held up last Friday by two robbers armed with home-made guns as he was driving out of the Papindo workshop yard along Abel Tasman street.
Mr Mondiai said that the suspects then drove off in the company vehicle but abandoned it later at the Papuan Compound where it was recovered by police.
Police are still looking for the suspects.
