Heavy rain blocks drainage, DES staff step in to help

THE Disaster and Emergency Service (DES) has stepped in to clear up a blocked drainage along the Bumayong road at Balob in Lae, Morobe province.
Director of the DES Roy Kamen said yesterday that his men would clear up the blocked drain because water was spilling onto the road.
He said this was making it hazardous for traffic and students, who have to cross the road to go to school, at the Balob Teachers college and Busu secondary school.
He said the drain was blocked a long time ago but the city authority had failed to clear up the blockage.
He said drain water had spilled onto the road as a result and parts of the road were usually covered with water.
Meanwhile, the heavy and continuous rain in Lae has wrecked havoc on the city’s road network.
A tour of the city roads by The National yesterday found that the streets at Top Town, Eriku, the Bumbu-Kamkumung-Bumayong roads and some sections of the roads in the industrial area were in a terrible state.
Authorities said Lae city was only 1m above sea level and the rain water was not running off into the sea easily.
