20 learn in-land fishing skills

TWENTY participants graduated from a workshop with certificates in aquaculture at a Markham valley village last week.
Funded by New Zealand Aid (NZAid) and sponsored by a non-governmental organisation Brisk Kanda, the workshop was both a refresher for some and an eye-opener for recruits.
Potsi village, situated in ward five of the Wampar LLG in Markham district along the Wau-Bulolo highway of Morobe, ventured into aquaculture farming in the early this decade.
It now has 73 ponds with more being build as interest grows.
The village has several hatcheries, nursery and breeder ponds.
It supplies some 3,000 fingerlings to local markets but according to workshop facilitator Douglas Kawa, this capability could be increased if the people practise what they had learnt and share with others.
Fingerlings are sold at 20 to 30 toea each.
General manager of Brisk Kanda Lukis Romaso urged the participants to utilise the skills and knowledge and share it with others.
“It is very difficult to access funding nowadays unless you take the first initiative. I urge you to take the initiative in expanding your project and we will help you seek funding,” Mr Romaso said.
Mr Kawa, who was initially responsible for Potsi’s interest and venture into aquaculture, urged the people to work together.
He said: “It is important to master the basics so the next stage of training will be easier to understand and ensure the project is sustainable.”
Participants highlighted that lack of feed mill, market access and tools were the biggest impediments to the project.
