| Commitment a must : Dion |
|
By VERONICA MANUK Elected Members and public servants in East New Britain have been challenged to make a full commitment to serve the people. Governor Leo Dion issued that challenge during the swearing in of the five elected ENB Members to the provincial assembly last week. The Members were Kokopo MP and Minister for Communication and Information Patrick Tammur, Rabaul MP and Minister for Justice and Attorney General Dr Allan Marat, Pomio MP and Minister for National Planning and District Development Paul Tiensten, Governor Dion and Gazelle MP Malakai Tabar. The two outgoing MPs Sir Rabbie Namaliu and Sinai Brown were also acknowledged for their contributions. Mr Dion said he wanted to see public servants be more dedicated to their jobs. “The people want servic es and I will be moving to have public servants located in local level governments instead of the district officers,” he said. “I want to see a public service that is more responsive and proactive.” He said time management was still a concern and urged everyone to strive for improvement. Mr Dion also challenged the Members to find time to understand the functions and responsibilities of the various committees in which they were members of so that it would enable them to know exactly what the people expected from them. He said this would also help them contribute meaningfully as members of the committees under the reform system of government. Meanwhile, Mr Dion thanked the Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare for recognising the quality of leadership the province had by allocating three ministries. However, he challenged the five elected Members to consider their primary roles as members of constituencies a priority. Provincial administrator Aquila Tubal also told the leaders that after completing their national duties, they should return to the province to work with the people.
