Probe negates buried alive report

By ELIZABETH MIAE
THE provincial AIDS committee of Southern Highlands has completed its investigations into the alleged report of people living with HIV/AIDS being buried alive in the Tari area and found no
evidence of such an incident.
Their investigations followed media report last month citing HIV/AIDS advocate Margaret Marabe as claiming to have witnessed three people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) buried alive at Yangome village.
The report prompted the National AIDS Council Secretariat to conduct its own investigation amid outrage expressed by church and NGO groups including donor and international agencies over the report.
The Southern Highlands AIDS committee’s deputy chairman Jeffery Hurums told The National that their officers were sent into the area where the alleged incident took place and found that nothing of that sort had happened.
He said the committee was now appealing to their partners, stakeholders, NGOs, district AIDS committees and VCT centres to consult them before releasing any information to the media or any other organisation.
“The latest article in the Post-Courier had sent wrong signals to everyone including the international community here and abroad, who are funding millions of kina for the response programme in the country,” he said.
