Chiefs win inaugural women rugby
final
THE Inaugural women’s rugby union
session ended in a grand final battle between Chiefs and Defence
on Sunday at the Bava Park here in Port Moresby.
The first ever women’s rugby union grand final displayed some
fine ball work and physical strength between the two teams with
solid tackles and some classic runs by the women.
Into the first five minutes of the first half the Chiefs women
in black set a pass from a scrum to their winger Pauline Arazi
wearing number 10 jumper to score the first try of the grand
final gaining 5 points for the Chiefs, the conversion attempt
was unsuccessful.
After another five minutes Pauline once again crossed the try
line to score Chiefs second try followed by another unsuccessful
conversion bring the score board to Chiefs 10 Defence yet to
score.
During the half time break Defence Coach John Larry talked his
green girls to have more ball possession to score tries.
When the game recommenced 6 minutes into the second half number
11 of Chiefs Kila Karara scored after breaking through Defence
backline defense.
After another 5 minutes Lydia Evesa number 10 of Defence
successfully crossed Chiefs try line to score another five
points for Defence and the conversion attempt by Defence number
7 Margaret Naua was unsuccessful.
Eight minutes before full time the Defence girls quickly
organized their offensive game work and sent No. 18 Leumi Luli
to the opponents score line for another 5 points and the
conversion got the ball between the goal post that brought the
final score for Defence to 12 and Sharks 15.
Present at the park to witness the inaugural women’s rugby grand
final was the United States Ambassador Ms Leslie Rowie and the
Commander PNGDF Commodore Peter Ilau who both presented the
winner’s cup to the Chiefs Club.
Meanwhile during the Defence women’s team reception after the
game Commodore Peter Ilau and his daughter Miss Mary Ilau
presented to mobile phones donated by Green Com to Leumi Luli
for the first try scorer for the team and Cathy for an
outstanding performance.
