Fast times for Moresby runners

By DOMINIC ARMBRUST
Port Moresby road runners recorded fast times at their meet last Saturday at the University of PNG Waigani campus.
Joe Kaikai led the sprinters home in the 2.6km dash in a fast time of 9mins 14 seconds, closely followed by Noko Negosa and Akis Ivia.
Laurence Chandy was in a class of his own as he cruised around the 5.8km course to claim victory on 20:27. The performance of the day belonged to Amber Cernovs who may have set a new female record by finishing in second position in a time of 25:10.
The remainder of the runners had to complete a second lap in the 11.6km event. As expected, Milton Iakosi was untroubled in taking first place in a quick time of 42:57. Iakosi is still fuming over his non-selection in the PNG Athletics squad sent to the just-concluded South Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa.
On the times recorded in Apia last week, Iakosi would have certainly collected a minor medal or two. Apparently, Iakosi was deleted from the team because of PNG Athletics’ “ageist” policy of selecting athletes with “potential” and Iakosi, being 34 years young, was considered “too old”.
James Gurumi beat Roger Hollis into second place in a time of just under 46 minutes.
Next Saturday, Port Moresby Road Runners will assemble at Gagoma Street, Korobosea, for the 2km, 4.8km and 9.6km events. Runners of all abilities are encouraged to attend and it is still only 20 toea to participate.

Weekend results:
